WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICRODERMABRASION AND GLYCOLIC PEELS?

The answer to this question comes in many parts.  First I"d like to explain what each one is and then explain why one would be better for one particular skin type over the other and vice versa.

A. Glycolic acid is generally used as a natural skin exfoliant and moisturizer.  Glycolic acid is perhaps the best-known of a group of chemicals called fruit acids or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). It is derived from sugar cane, so it can be considered a natural product.

Glycolic acid works as an exfoliating agent because of its high acidity but easy solubility. When placed on the skin as part of an exfoliating cream or gel, glycolic acid goes under the damaged upper layers of skin and destroys the 'glue' which holds dead skin to the surface. As this dead skin is chemically burned off, the other ingredients carry the individual flakes away and a water rinse neutralizes the remaining acid. The result is a much-smoother skin surface and a more youthful appearance. A secondary benefit is glycolic acid's ability to draw moisturizers into the newly-exfoliated skin surface.

B. Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-surgical way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, get rid of superficial acne scars, fine wrinkles and sunspots, evens skin tone, eliminates white and black heads and minimizes large pores by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. No chemicals or laser beams are used, only aluminum oxide micro crystals that gently sandblast your skin, while a vacuum sucks the crystals back up in a *closed system leaving it smooth and fresh.

The purpose of the vacuum is not only to suck the used crystals and skin cells back up but also improves circulation to the surface of the skin, which in turn promotes a faster rate of skin regeneration by increasing its elasticity and collagen production. The skin looks fresh and feels smooth as soon as treatment is over.

So the obvious similarities are that both are used as a professional exfoliation.  Why a technician would choose one over the other largely depends on the client's skin condition at the time of the consultation and may change as the clients skin changes.  If the goal of the technician is to get acne breakouts under control, they would most likely recommend a glycolic peel.  Microdermabrasion is not recommended for active breakouts because it would just end up irritating the skin even more and may even lead to a larger break out or the spread the bacteria.  Microdermabrasion would most likely be recommended to a client who has no active break outs but has some sun damage or fine lines.  A seasoned technician can tell which of her clients needs one procedure over the other.

Both procedures can be done in about an hour and should be done in a series of 5-12 sessions.  Precautions should be made to stay out of the sun post treatment and the use of sunscreen is highly recommended.

Retail Products are a must if you're thinking about either of these procedures. A glycolic lotion/gel should be applied at least 2-3 weeks prior to the initial visit because you want to start with an even canvas so to speak. The more acclimated your skin is to the glycolic the better results you will have from the beginning of the treatment.

What is Toner, and why would it be used on my hair?
Toner is generally a demi* permanent gloss used to neutralize brassy (yellow/ yellow orange) after bleaching or highlighting. It usually evens out the tonicity of the hair color and makes it look more natural. If you’re still not sure what brassy means, think of a copper penny. That copper color would be toned to look more brown, honey or caramel.
Demi*- typically a color that washes out with 10-12 shampoos.

What is the difference between a Brazilian and regular bikini wax?
Basically, with the Brazilian, hair is removed in the front, back and everything in between. Some clients prefer a strip in front and some opt for getting it all removed. A bikini wax would include removing any of the unwanted hair outside of the underwear line. The Technician will ask the client to specify how far in they would like to be waxed and adjust the price accordingly

What does a person normally wear during a bikini/Brazilian?
Disposable underwear are provided to clients getting a bikini wax. No underwear is used during a Brazilian because they would just get in the way of the Technician. However, a towel is used as a modesty drape is used in order to make the client feel more comfortable about being naked from the waist down.
